What Is Spray Painting?

Spray painting is the process of applying liquid paint to a surface using a spray gun. In the automotive industry, it is used to restore a vehicle’s original colour, repair damage from accidents, or give a vehicle a new look. Spray painting is not just about appearance—it also provides a protective layer against corrosion, scratches, and the harsh South African climate.

Spray Painters typically work alongside Panelbeaters, who repair dents and structural damage, before the painter refinishes the surface to make the vehicle look brand new.

The Process of Spray Painting

Preparation – Cleaning and sanding the vehicle to remove dirt, rust, and old paint. Any dents or imperfections are filled and smoothed.
Masking – Covering areas that should not be painted, such as windows, trims, and lights, using masking tape and plastic sheets.
Priming – Applying a primer coat to create a smooth, adhesive surface for the paint. This also prevents rust and improves durability.
Colour Application – Using a spray gun to evenly apply layers of paint, often in multiple coats for full coverage.
Drying And Curing – Allowing the paint to dry in a controlled environment, often in a spray booth with heat and ventilation.
Polishing And Finishing – Buffing and polishing the surface to achieve a flawless, glossy finish.

How Long Does It Take to Qualify as a Spraypainter in South Africa?

Spray painting is recognised as a skilled trade in South Africa and falls under the training and certification of MERSETA. To qualify, a person usually undergoes a structured apprenticeship that combines theory and practical work.

Training Duration

Between 3 and 4 years.

Requirements

• A minimum of Grade 9 (some employers prefer matric).
• Completion of formal training through EMPOWERMENT ACADEMY.
• On-the-job learning in our workshop under the guidance of experienced artisans.
• Passing a Trade Test to earn a Red Seal qualification.
