Panelbeating

What Is Panelbeating?

Panelbeating is the process of repairing the bodywork of motor vehicles after collisions or accidents. It
involves reshaping, straightening, welding, filling, sanding, and repainting damaged panels. The goal is to
restore the structural integrity and aesthetics of the vehicle, so that it looks and functions as it did before
the damage occurred. Panelbeaters work closely with spray painters, mechanics, and insurers to providea complete repair service.

The Process of Panelbeating

Assessment

Inspecting the vehicle to determine the extent of damage and providing a repair quote.

Stripping

Removing damaged panels, trims, lights, and fittings to access the affected areas.

Straightening And Welding

Using hydraulic equipment and welding tools to realign the vehicle’s frame and repair metal panels.

Filling And Sanding

Applying body filler to smooth out dents and imperfections, followed by sanding for an even surface.

Spray Painting

Removing damaged panels, trims, lights, and fittings to access the affected areas.

Reassembly

Replacing trims, fittings, and any mechanical parts removed during the process.

Quality Check

– Ensuring that the vehicle’s appearance and safety standards are fully restored before handing it back to the owner.

In South Africa, panelbeating is recognised as a skilled trade under the MERSETA (Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority). To qualify as a panelbeater, an individual typically follows an apprenticeship pathway.

Training Duration

About 3 to 4 years of practical and theoretical training.

Requirements

• Completion of a trade test at EMPOWERMENT ACADEMY.
• Practical on-the-job experience under supervision.
• Theoretical training through EMPOWERMENT ACADEMY
• Once qualified, a panelbeater receives a Red Seal Trade Certificate, which allows them to work locally and, in many cases, internationally.

The Importance of Panelbeating in South Africa

With South Africa’s high rate of road accidents and the growing number of vehicles on the
road, panelbeaters play a vital role in keeping cars roadworthy and safe. Beyond safety, they
also help maintain vehicle value and appearance, which is particularly important for resale.

Panelbeating remains a stable career path, offering skilled artisans opportunities for employment in Panelbeating workshops, insurance-approved service centres, or even self-employment through privately owned panel shops.
